Best Time to Travel to Bhutan

Bhutan is a year-round destination, but the best time for your trip depends on what you want to experience. The official Bhutan tourism FAQ divides the year into four seasons: spring from March to May, summer from June to August, autumn from September to November, and winter from December to February. Because of Bhutan’s altitude range and monsoon influence, conditions vary by region and elevation.

Spring (March–May)
Spring is one of the most popular times to visit Bhutan. Valleys are green, flowers bloom and the weather is generally pleasant for sightseeing and moderate hikes. This is an excellent season for cultural touring and photography.

Summer / Monsoon (June–August)
Summer brings rainfall, greener landscapes and fewer crowds in some areas. Travel is still possible, especially for guests who prefer quieter journeys and lush scenery, though road conditions and visibility can vary.

Autumn (September–November)
Autumn is another excellent season, known for clear skies, mountain views and major festivals. It is especially good for first-time visitors, photographers and trekkers seeking stable weather.

Winter (December–February)
Winter is crisp and quieter, with sunny days in many valleys and fewer visitors at major sites. It is a good time for cultural trips, and Phobjikha is especially attractive during black-necked crane season.

Recommendation:
For classic cultural tours, spring and autumn are usually the strongest choices. For fewer crowds, winter is excellent. For lush scenery and a softer pace, summer can also be rewarding.
